Privacy policy
Last updated: October 2026
Jawla is an app and website that help people in Egypt decide where to go out. This page explains what we collect, why, and your rights under Egypt's Personal Data Protection Law (Law 151 of 2020).
What we collect
- Account: the name, email and photo Google or Apple share when you sign in.
- Preferences: neighbourhood, budget, mood, outing types and accessibility needs.
- Activity in the app: places viewed, saved or swiped, and picks accepted. This is what makes recommendations fit.
- Waitlist: your email, your WhatsApp number if you add one, and your quiz answers.
- Device: a push notification token, if notifications are on.
Location
We use your location only with your consent, and only to work out distance and travel time to places. Your phone rounds it to about 100 metres before sending it, and we never store, log or share it.
Without consent, distance is measured from the centre of the neighbourhood you chose. You can withdraw consent at any time in your phone's or the app's settings.
Why we collect it
To run the service: sign-in, recommendations, saving and sharing. To send waitlist and invite emails. And to decide which neighbourhood opens next.
We don't sell anyone's data or use it for advertising.
Services we use
- Google Cloud in Frankfurt (Germany): servers and the database.
- Cloudflare: site protection, place photos, and the bot check on forms (Turnstile).
- Resend: sending emails.
- Sentry: crash and error reports, without personal data.
- PostHog in the EU: usage analytics, linked to an account ID only, never an email or a location.
- Google and Apple: sign-in.
Your rights
Under Law 151 of 2020 you can:
- Know what data we hold about you, and get a copy.
- Correct anything that's wrong.
- Delete your account and all its data.
- Withdraw consent for location or notifications at any time.
- Object to any use of your data, or complain to the Personal Data Protection Centre.
Downloading and deleting your data
In the app: Me → Settings → Download my data, or Delete account.
On the website: the delete account page sends a confirmation link to the account's email. Deleting removes the account, preferences, activity and saved places, and revokes Sign in with Apple if it was used.
How long we keep data
Data stays while the account exists and is deleted with it. Backups expire on their own after a limited period.
Children
Jawla is made for adults. If we learn that a child signed up without a parent's consent, we delete the account.
Changes
If we change anything important in this policy, we'll say so in the app or by email first.
